N-HYPPADEC DEEPENS 2026 FLOOD AWARENESS CAMPAIGN IN AWE AND LAFIA COMMUNITIES, NASARAWA STATE
The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has continued its Flood Awareness and Advocacy Campaign across flood-prone communities in Nasarawa State.
The delegation was led by the Head of Press and Public Affairs, Nura Tanko Wakili, in company of the Head of GIS/Climate Change Unit, Hajiya Rukayya Bahago, and the Nasarawa State Coordinator, Engr. Muhammad Maidunama Waziri.
Addressing members of the various communities, Nura Tanko Wakili highlighted the Commission’s mandate of improving the welfare of hydroelectric power-producing communities through sustainable intervention projects. He explained that the flood awareness campaign was aimed at equipping residents with the knowledge and skills required to prevent and minimize the devastating effects of flooding. He educated traditional rulers and community members on safety measures to be observed before, during, and after flood incidents, while emphasizing the need for stronger collaboration between N-HYPPADEC and traditional institutions to protect lives and property.
Speaking during the sensitization, the Head of GIS/Climate Change Unit, Hajiya Rukayya Bahago, urged women, youths, and other residents to remain vigilant throughout the flood season. She advised households to keep important documents in safe and waterproof locations, own a functional radio for weather updates and emergency information, and strictly adhere to early warning advisories issued by relevant authorities. According to her, preparedness and timely response remain the most effective ways to reduce the impact of flooding on vulnerable communities.
The traditional rulers and community leaders who received the delegation commended N-HYPPADEC for its proactive approach to disaster risk reduction through community sensitization. They acknowledged the Commission’s interventions in water safety, flood management, and humanitarian support, describing the advocacy campaign as timely and impactful. They pledged to mobilize their subjects and ensure that the flood preparedness messages are disseminated to the grassroots, reaffirming their commitment to working closely with the Commission to build more resilient communities.
At Tunga in Awe Local Government Area, the District Head expressed appreciation for the Commission’s visit and lauded its commitment to protecting vulnerable communities through sustained advocacy. He appealed for the construction of access roads within the community and assured the delegation that residents would provide locally available materials, including sand and gravel, to support the project.
Similarly, the Emir of Azara, His Royal Highness Dr. Kabiru Musa Ibrahim, the royal father, warmly welcomed the delegation and commended N-HYPPADEC for bringing the flood preparedness campaign to the Emirate. He described the advocacy as timely and pledged to champion the initiative by mobilizing traditional institutions and ensuring that the safety messages reach communities across the grassroots, thereby strengthening collective efforts to reduce the impact of flooding.
