N-HYPPADEC DISTRIBUTES LIFE JACKETS DURING FLOOD AWARENESS CAMPAIGN IN KWARA STATE.

The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has distributed life jackets and educational materials as part of its ongoing flood sensitisation and awareness campaign in Kwara State.

The campaign is aimed at educating residents on preparedness measures in response to the 2026 flood forecast issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

The team, led by the Acting Director of Community and Rural Development, Malam Hassan Haruna, assessed the level of community preparedness and compliance with flood safety advisories.

Speaking during the exercise, Malam Hassan Haruna urged residents to take official flood warnings seriously and strictly adhere to safety guidelines.

He cautioned against practices such as blocking drainage channels, indiscriminate waste disposal, and other activities that increase the risk of flooding.

The team also engaged community leaders, stakeholders, and residents on practical disaster risk reduction measures, while distributing life jackets to riverine communities and educational materials to enhance public awareness.

The delegation further enlightened residents on the appropriate measures to take before, during, and after flooding to safeguard lives and property.

To strengthen intergovernmental collaboration on flood prevention and environmental management, the delegation also held strategic meetings with key officials of the Kwara State Government, including Dr. Abubakar O. Ayinla, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment; Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas, Commissioner for Livestock Development; and Mrs. Funke Sokoya, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture.

The discussions focused on enhancing collaboration between N-HYPPADEC and the relevant state ministries to protect agricultural livelihoods, improve environmental management, and strengthen disaster preparedness in vulnerable communities.
