The event, held in Kaduna State, brought together government officials, environmental experts, development partners, traditional rulers, community leaders, women's groups, youth organizations, and other stakeholders to reflect on the importance of environmental stewardship and collective action in addressing contemporary environmental challenges.
Delivering his address at the occasion, the Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa (Katukan Yauri), expressed appreciation to the Kaduna State Ministry of Environment for the collaboration and described it as a privilege for the Commission to co-host the 2026 World Environment Day celebration. He reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development across its mandate states.
The Managing Director noted that environmental sustainability remains a central pillar of N-HYPPADEC's development agenda, emphasizing that the Commission has continued to implement strategic interventions aimed at mitigating environmental hazards and improving the livelihoods of people residing in hydroelectric power-producing areas.
He highlighted several environmental and socio-economic initiatives undertaken by the Commission, including the construction of drainage channels and erosion control infrastructure to reduce the devastating impact of flooding on vulnerable communities. He further disclosed that N-HYPPADEC has continued to implement youth transformation and empowerment programmes designed to create sustainable economic opportunities while encouraging environmental responsibility among young people.
He further emphasized that N-HYPPADEC remains committed to strengthening partnerships with Federal and State Ministries of Environment, development partners, and other relevant stakeholders in addressing environmental challenges and advancing climate adaptation and mitigation measures.
In his remarks, the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Kaduna State, Dr. Abubakar Buba, commended N-HYPPADEC and other stakeholders for their contributions toward environmental protection and sustainable development. He emphasized the urgent need for collective action in combating environmental degradation, promoting afforestation, enhancing waste management practices, and safeguarding natural resources for future generations.
A major highlight of the event was the symbolic tree-planting exercise and donation of seedlings by N-HYPPADEC to be distributed to beneficiaries in Kaduna State.
The exercise served as a demonstration of the collective commitment to environmental conservation and the promotion of afforestation as a practical strategy for mitigating the effects of climate change, combating desertification, and restoring ecological balance.
