The Managing Director of the National Hydro-Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa (FCNA, FNIIS, FNIM), (Katukan Yauri), has sympathised with the Kebbi State Governor, His Excellency Dr. Nasir Idris (Kauran Gwandu), and the Emir of Yauri, His Royal Highness Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu Abdullahi (OON), over separate bandit attacks in different parts of the state.
The attacks, which occurred in Kawara, Binuwa, Kalkami, Dabe, Kasoshi, Kafar Giwa, and Sa Madubi communities in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, reportedly claimed several lives and destroyed property worth millions of naira.
Speaking during a condolence visit to the state government, Alhaji Yelwa described the attacks as catastrophic and condemnable, noting that they were aimed at destabilising peace and economic activities in the affected communities.
“We condemn this catastrophic act of cowardice by the terrorist group whose motive is to disrupt peace and rob people of their means of livelihood,” he said.
“We express our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Kebbi State, particularly the families of those who lost their lives, and sympathise with those who lost their property. No amount of support we are bringing here will restore the lives and property lost, but we felt the need to be here and offer our modest support to cushion the effects,” Yelwa added.
As part of immediate relief efforts for displaced persons, the N-HYPPADEC boss announced the donation of 100 bags of 50kg rice, 100 bags of 70kg assorted grains, 35 jerrycans of 20-litre cooking oil, 15 cartons of seasoning, 15 cartons each of detergent and soap, 300 pieces each of blankets and mats, as well as N10 million cash gift.
While acknowledging the efforts of Governor Nasir Idris in tackling insecurity, Yelwa said, “Your Excellency, we are aware of your commitment to ending insecurity and the huge investments you are making in the sector. We are confident that you will not rest until this challenge is addressed. On our part, we will advocate for the reconstruction of destroyed property and increased security presence in the affected communities.”
In his remarks, Governor Nasir Idris, represented by the Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Alhaji Garba Salisu Takware, expressed appreciation to N-HYPPADEC for its swift intervention.
He commended the Commission for consistently supporting its host communities through impactful initiatives and assured that the relief materials would be promptly distributed to the victims.
He added that the state government had also made adequate arrangements to cater for the needs of affected communities.
The Commissioner further noted that the administration is intensifying efforts to beef up security across the state to combat banditry and other criminal activities.
The N-HYPPADEC Managing Director also led his delegation to the palace of the Emir of Yauri to condole with the traditional ruler over the incident.
In his response, the Emir of Yauri expressed gratitude to N-HYPPADEC for its support and solidarity with the victims during this difficult period.
