N-HYPPADEC CONDUCTS ASSESSMENT TOUR OF DUKKU WATER SCHEME, PLEDGES IMMEDIATE INTERVENTION TO END DECADES OF WATER SCARCITY IN THE COMMUNITY.

The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has conducted an extensive assessment of the Dukku Small Water Scheme in Gombe State, ahead of a planned upgrade of the facility by the commission.

The team, led by the Director of Operations, Engr. Iliyasu Abdullahi Wara visited different components of the scheme, including the TK pumping station reservoir, Dukku booster station, Wuro Tara community borehole, and Gombe Abba Riverside.

Speaking after inspecting the facilities, Engr. Abdullahi Wara said the assessment was a follow-up to the familiarisation visit by the Managing Director in January.

He said the Managing Director had expressed concern over the acute shortage of water in the community.

“We are on a tour of the Dukku Water Scheme to assess the possibility of providing intervention, as well as rehabilitating and expanding the water works. What I saw from our visits today, including our visit to the Emir of Dukku and his remarks on the scarcity of water that has bedeviled the township, is quite touching. Based on our assessment, I will report back to my Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa (Katukan Yauri), on the need for immediate intervention on this water scheme”, he said.

While assuring that the projects would be executed as soon as possible, Engr. Wara announced the approval for the immediate construction of two hybrid solar-powered boreholes at Wuro Tarra.

According to him, the two boreholes are a temporary intervention before the complete upgrade of the existing facilities.

In his remarks, the Gombe State Commissioner for Special Duties, Shehu Yerima Abdullahi, commended the Managing Director for being a man of his word and for fulfilling his pledge to the state.

While praising the Commission, he said the intervention reinforces the commitments of the State Governor, His Excellency Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya to strategic partnerships that would benefit the masses.

“This is a partnership that works. We commend His Excellency, Governor Inuwa Yahaya, for this kind of partnership, which will be of great benefit to our people. The Managing Director has sent a high-powered delegation; I am here, and the Commissioner for Water Resources is also here to see how we can boost and upgrade the water supply in Dukku.

“We expect a high level of work—work that will be sustainable. We expect N-HYPPADEC to do its best in providing the town with high-quality water,” the commissioner said.

Speaking in the same vein, the State Commissioner for Water Resources, Mohammed Sa'id Mohammed, said the project is timely and heartwarming to the state government.

He said the intervention would complement Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s efforts to revive six major water projects in the state.

“The coming of N-HYPPADEC is timely and will complement the efforts of the state government. Nobody can do it alone; you have to seek partnership, and that is what we are doing. I am very happy and excited about the visit of the N-HYPPADEC team and what they have come to do.

“They are going to complement what is already on the ground. As you can see from our assessment, these water plants supply water to the metropolis, but the challenge is that the population has expanded over the years. So, what is on the ground, even if functioning effectively, cannot meet the demands of the population. That is why there is a need to expand the reservoir in town, which is about 500,000 litres.

“At the end of the day, the goal is to ensure an adequate water supply for our people. It is very disheartening to see the kind of stress people go through to access drinking water”, Mr Mohammed noted.

Responding to questions on the funding of the project, Mr. Mohammed said it would be completely sponsored by N-HYPPADEC.

Similarly, the Executive Chairman of Dukku Local Government, Adamu Muhammad Waziri, who could not hide his joy, said, “The people are already happy. Go to Dukku town and see how excited they are. Water is more than honey in Dukku; therefore, we truly appreciate N-HYPPADEC.”

Earlier, the delegation visited the Emir of Dukku, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Haruna Abdulkadiri Rashid II, at his palace. The monarch promised to offer all necessary support to ensure the success of the project.

He commended the N-HYPPADEC management for coming to the aid of the community.
