Provision of Potable Water

New-Bussa and Yauri were the two major settlements affected by the construction of Kainji Dam. The towns, though, administrative headquarters of two ancient kingdoms were completely relocated from their original settlements by the Kainji Dam Authority to pave way for the construction and operations of the dam for hydroelectricity generation. This was however with some incentives including provision of clean and potable water supply. However, water supply systems in New-Bussa and Yauri have over the years faced numerous challenges including aging infrastructure, inadequate capacity to meet the demand of growing population, water quality issues, and inefficient distribution networks. To address these challenges, the Commission in collaboration Niger and Kebbi State governments, initiated rehabilitation and expansion project to improve the efficiency and capacity of the water schemes to enhance access to clean water for the residents of both regions.

The two projects which gulfed over 4billion Naira cover the rehabilitation of water intake, sedimentation tank, aeration tanks, and high lift pumps. Additionally, the construction of sedimentation tanks at the intake plant, expansion of distribution networks, rehabilitation of clear water reservoirs, backwash overhead tank and reservoir cleaning, and relocation of pipelines are key components of the projects at Yauri while  In New-Bussa, it includes the rehabilitation of intake and high lift pump station, expansion of the distribution network, construction of a Braithwaite reservoir, rehabilitation of the distribution network, and renovation of structures and perimeter fencing. It also covers renovation of office, staff quarters and supply of water treatment chemicals and projects vehicles for both projects.

Yelwa’s lofty and progressive initiatives in provision of portable water is extended to construction of 796 motorized solar powered boreholes across the affected communities to enhance access to potable water and save the communities of the burden of disease occasioned by unhygienic water. Additionally, over 500 hand pumps were constructed while another 350 broken-down hand pumps were rehabilitated across the member states of the Commission.

The main target output of the projects is to enhance the capacity and efficiency of the water supply systems in both New-Bussa and Yauri and enhance access of rural communities to clean and potable water supply. The project aims to increase water production capacity, improve water quality, expand distribution networks, and ensure reliable access to clean water for the communities in the member states.
