Security Support Services
Like many rural communities in Nigeria, communities affected by the operations of Hydroelectric Dams are faced with security challenges. This sometimes, hinders the progress of the local economy and affects social relations between communities. It is often said, security is everybody’s business. This premised the intervention of relevant stakeholders in supporting and enhancing security situation in their areas of interest. Leveraging on the outcome of the earlier needs assessment conducted, the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission heed to the plights of its host communities to address emerging security challenges.
Plateau state for example, is known to be fraught by communal clashes and other related criminal activities particularly, in the Gashish District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. A mobile police barrack was established in the community to respond to distress call. This facility was however deteriorating and becoming unhabitable to security personnel. N-HYPPADEC in line with its mandate, took over the remodeling and expansion of the facility from a barrack to mobile police base in 2022. The Four Hundred and Seventy Million Naira project covers renovation of both senior and junior staff quarters, construction of additional blocks, renovation of Commandants quarters and admin block as well as installation of a transformer and connection to national grid, construction of solar powered motorized borehole, security watch tower, water reticulation and electrification of the facility. This singular intervention not only restored hope to the already devasted community but, motivated the security personnel to discharge their responsibility of ensuring safety and security in the communities.
To further ensure safety and security in the affected communities, the Commission procured and distributed 2500 motorcycles to security agencies and vigilante groups for routine patrols in these communities. This was accompanied by other logistics support to security agencies for a hitch free operation.
The Commission equally installed solar streetlights across the affected communities to shelve the rising tide of criminal activities. Over Two Thousand Five Hundred of the solar streetlights were supplied and strategically installed to illuminate the communities denying criminal element of a conducive environment to operate.
