PRIORITISE STAFF WELFARE, SHUN PERSONAL INTERESTS, MD N-HYPPADEC CHARGES NEWLY INAUGURATED LABOUR LEADERS.

The Managing Director of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa (Katukan Yauri), has charged the newly inaugurated executives of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) to prioritise the welfare of its members and shun personal interests.

Alhaji Yelwa gave the charge during the inauguration of the pioneer executive of the AUPCTRE N-HYPPADEC Chapter by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Niger State Chapter on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at the commission's headquarters in Minna.

Represented by the Director of Administration and Finance, Dr. Haruna Jimoh Gabi, the Managing Director said the inauguration of the labour union was in fulfilment of the management's commitment to promoting labour-friendly policies and ensuring harmonious industrial relations.

“This is a call to duty. Divorce yourselves from personal interests and personal aggrandisement. Work towards the common goal, and there will be no failure," he said.

He noted that the commission has consistently prioritised staff welfare and development, describing the union as a partner in promoting teamwork, productivity, and organisational growth.

According to him, the commission's transparent and open-door policy would make the work of the union easier, as management remains open to accountability and constructive engagement.

"We tend to give maximum cooperation to staff to the extent that we created a Welfare Unit headed, not by a junior staff member, but by an Assistant Director.

"As management, we have no issue with the coming of the union because we have nothing to fear. Rather, it will translate into greater efficiency and productivity”, Dr. Gabi said.

He further stated, "I have confidence in the Pioneer Managing Director, who has always placed staff welfare on the front burner. You will agree with me that the labour leaders have little responsibility on their shoulders because the commission has been operating as though the union had always existed.”

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Niger State Chapter, Comrade Abdulkareem Idris Lafene, urged the management of N-HYPPADEC to embrace the labour union as a partner in progress.

While congratulating the newly inaugurated executives, Comr. Lafene, who was represented by the State Treasurer of the NLC, Comrade Adamu Akayago, expressed optimism that the union and the commission's management would enjoy a harmonious working relationship.

In his acceptance speech, the Chairman of AUPCTRE, N-HYPPADEC Chapter, Engr. Ibrahim Adamu Haruna, pledged to prioritise the welfare of workers and promote a cordial working relationship between the union and management.

He also clarified that the labour unions are not antagonists, as believed in some quarters, calling for a change of perception.

He stressed that the union exists to protect workers' interests while contributing to the overall growth and success of the commission.
