N-HYPPADEC FOLLOWS-UP ON FLOOD AWARENESS AND ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN ACROSS MEMBER STATES.

​As the rainy season approaches, the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has continued its annual comprehensive advocacy and flood awareness campaign.

​This proactive sensitization initiative covers all ten of the Commission’s member states: Benue, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Gombe, and Taraba. In close collaboration with state governments, traditional institutions, and local media, the campaign seeks to move from a reactive disaster response to a strategic, preventive approach, thereby protecting lives, livelihoods, and essential infrastructure.

​To keep stakeholders and host communities fully informed, the Commission will be providing direct updates from each member state as these campaigns are conducted on the ground.

STATE UPDATE: PLATEAU STATE CAMPAIGN.

In an effort to mitigate the effects of flooding and enhance community safety, the Commission carried out its 2026 Advocacy and Flood Awareness Campaign in identified high-risk areas within Plateau State.

​Representing the Commission, the Deputy Director of Finance, Ms. Ruth Asabe Essien, engaged with key stakeholders from the Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, and Bassa Local Government Areas. This sensitization initiative is part of N-HYPPADEC's continuous efforts to keep host communities well-informed of seasonal flood hazards.

​During her address, Ms. Essien thanked community members for their swift, active participation. She explained how the operations of local dams have historically exacerbated flooding challenges for numerous host communities, making targeted education on flood preparedness and response strategies a top priority for the Federal Government through N-HYPPADEC.

​She noted that the awareness campaign is designed to educate residents on the causes of flooding, the risks associated with it, and the precautionary measures they should take before, during, and after flood incidents to safeguard lives and property.

While in her address, the Deputy Director relayed a message from the Managing Director, stating:

"It is imperative that you adhere to the safety guidelines and precautionary measures rolled out by the relevant agencies, as together we can mitigate the severe consequences of flooding in our communities."

​Also, as part of its efforts to support agricultural productivity and strengthen the livelihoods of farmers in the host communities, seed planters were also distributed to selected beneficiaries. The distribution is expected to enhance farming efficiency, encourage increased crop production, and complement the Commission's broader goal of improving the socio-economic well-being of communities within its mandate.

​The Commission strongly urges residents in all flood-prone areas across the remaining member states to heed early warning systems, clear blocked waterways, and cooperate with N-HYPPADEC field teams as safety protocols are established.
