MD N-HYPPADEC JOINS FLOOD AWARENESS CAMPAIGN IN ARGUNGU, AS OTHER TEAM MEMBERS VISIT YAURI, BUNZA LGAS OF KEBBI STATE.
The Managing Director of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa (Katukan Yauri), has led a high-powered delegation of the commission to the Emir of Argungu, His Royal Highness Alhaji Sama'ila Muhammadu Mera (CON), in furtherance of the ongoing advocacy and flood awareness campaign.
The campaign, which is taking place simultaneously across the 10 member states, is in line with the statutory mandate of the Commission to mitigate ecological hazards in riverine communities.
The visit by the high-powered delegation served as a critical touchpoint to strengthen already existing collaborative ties with the traditional ruler.
While expressing profound appreciation to the monarch for his role in promoting peace and unity, Alhaji said the primary purpose of the visit was to brief the Emirate on the strategic timeline for the 2026 Flood Awareness and Advocacy Campaign.
To demonstrate the Commission's active commitment to these safety measures, and also as a practical response to these ecological vulnerabilities, the Managing Director announced that the Commission has commenced the desilting and evacuation of approximately 6,000 linear metres of township waterways.
This major drainage intervention specifically encompasses the Argungu Water Collector, stretching from the Garba Bachaka Area down to the Tsohon Masallacin Jumu'a near the historic Kanta Museum.
He stated that the project is strategically designed to enhance urban drainage, reduce seasonal flood risks, and provide robust protection for lives and property within the Emirate.
Complementing these structural engineering efforts, the Managing Director also donated 100 life safety jackets to the Emirate.
He explained that the high-grade life jackets are designated for rapid deployment within the riverine and catchment areas of the Argungu Emirate.
He also acknowledged the long-standing developmental partnership between the Commission and the Emirate, noting that several multi-sectoral interventions have been successfully implemented over the years.
Responding to the delegation, His Royal Highness, the Emir of Argungu, warmly received the Managing Director and expressed his deep gratitude for N-HYPPADEC's proactive intervention measures.
The Emir commended the Commission for its transparency and resilience despite tight financial constraints, particularly praising the ongoing drainage desilting and the life jacket donation as timely, life-saving actions for his people.
Reaffirming the support of the Argungu Emirate, His Royal Highness assured the delegation that the traditional council would immediately mobilise community structures to enforce early warning compliance, offering his continuous prayers and wise counsel for the successful realisation of the Commission's mandate.
Similarly, the commission team also visited Raha District of Bunza Local Government of Kebbi State.
Representing the Managing Director, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, FCNA (Katukan Yauri), the Head of Audit, Malam Isiyaku Aliyu, FCNA, appealed to members of the Raha community and its environs to embrace the Commission's flood prevention message in order to reduce the devastating impact of seasonal flooding.
According to him, the campaign initiative demonstrates N-HYPPADEC's determination to shift from reactive disaster response to proactive, community-based preparedness through sustained public enlightenment and stakeholder engagement.
The sensitisation focused on flood prevention, early warning signs, emergency preparedness, and the responsibilities of communities before, during, and after flooding.
In his remarks, the Kebbi State Coordinator, Mustapha Bello Gwandu, assured residents that the Commission would continue to engage all relevant stakeholders in efforts to prevent the recurring loss of lives and property to flood-related disasters.
In Yauri, the area officer, Abdul Malik Ahmed, who represented the commission, urged residents to abide by all safety protocols issued by the commission.
