The Managing Director of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa(Katukan Yauri) has paid a condolence visit to Daudu-Dawadawa, an island community in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State, following the tragic boat mishap that claimed the lives of 11 passengers.

The unfortunate incident reportedly occurred when a boat capsized while conveying community members returning home from a burial ceremony in a neighbouring village.

Speaking during the visit, the Managing Director commiserated with the traditional ruler, community leaders, and families who lost their loved ones in the tragedy.

While reaffirming N-HYPPADEC's commitment to improving safety in riverine communities through sustained awareness campaigns, distribution of life jackets and other interventions, he appealed to boat operators and passengers to strictly observe safety regulations, including the mandatory use of life jackets and compliance with established water transportation guidelines.

As part of immediate measures to prevent a recurrence of the incident, Alhaji Yelwa donated 50 life jackets to enhance safety for boat users and pledged support towards improving the transportation system in the area.

In addition, the Managing Director announced financial assistance for the affected families and pledged to construct a school, install solar-powered streetlights, and a motorized solar-powered borehole to enhance access to potable water in the communities.

Earlier, the Managing Director was at the Benue State Government House to commiserate with the Government and people of Benue State over the tragic incident.

The Governor of Benue State, Reverend Hyacinth Alia, represented by the Deputy Governor, Sam Ode, appreciated the visit and reaffirmed the state government's commitment to strengthening collaboration with N-HYPPADEC to enhance the safety, welfare and overall well-being of residents, particularly those living in riverine communities.
