N-HYPPADEC STRENGTHENS FLOOD PREPAREDNESS THROUGH STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENTS ACROSS BENUE STATE.

Building on the momentum of the successful campaigns in Plateau, Kaduna, and Kogi, N-HYPPADEC has strengthened its 2026 Flood Awareness and Advocacy Campaign follow-up in Benue State. A team led by Nura Tanko Wakili, Head of Press and Public Affairs, embarked on stakeholder engagements with local government officials, traditional rulers, and community leaders across flood-prone communities.

The team, which also comprised Hajiya Rukaiya Bahago, Head of GIS/Climate Change unit and Benue State Coordinator, Mr Lee Atbee Ahenjir, sensitized stakeholders on flood preparedness, emphasizing the need to clear blocked drainages, discourage building on flood plains, relocate vulnerable persons where necessary, and prioritize the protection of lives during emergencies.

The delegation also highlighted N-HYPPADEC’s interventions, including the construction of flood control infrastructure and the desilting of blocked resettlement housing schemes, and expressed the Commission's commitment to supporting projects that align with its mandate.

During the engagements, the Chief of Agatu, HRH Chief Dr. Godwin Onah, commended N-HYPPADEC for its life-saving interventions, recalling that a community member survived a water-related incident because of the Commission’s earlier intervention through the distribution of lifejackets.

While expressing appreciation for the Commission’s concern for the welfare of riverine communities, the monarch appealed for the provision of additional life jackets to further enhance safety on water transportation.

Similarly, Ter Makurdi, HRH Chief Vincent Ioryem Aule, lauded N-HYPPADEC for its continuous efforts in protecting lives and supporting host communities.

He assured the delegation that he would convene his traditional council to brief them on the flood awareness campaign and ensure the information is effectively disseminated to the grassroots.

Across the various communities visited in Benue State, traditional rulers and community leaders expressed profound appreciation for N-HYPPADEC's numerous developmental initiatives and for bringing timely flood awareness messages directly to the people.

They described the Commission’s proactive approach as a clear demonstration of its commitment to the safety and well-being of host communities.

The stakeholders offered prayers for the continued success of the Commission and pledged to work closely with N-HYPPADEC by supporting its programmes and mobilizing their communities to embrace safety measures in order to safeguard lives, property, and means of livelihood.

The team also interacted with some local government council chairmen on the need to strengthen development control and drive partnerships that will enhance effective service delivery across the Commission’s areas of coverage.
