N-HYPPADEC FLOOD SENSITISATION CAMPAIGN REACHES GARATU SHATTA COMMUNITY IN BOSSO LGA OF NIGER STATE.
The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has taken its 2026 flood sensitisation and awareness campaign to Garatu Shatta Community in Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State as part of efforts to reduce the impact of flooding in vulnerable communities.
The sensitisation team was led by the Niger State Coordinator of N-HYPPADEC, Alhaji Umar Alhaji Musa.
The campaign was aimed at educating residents on flood prevention measures, preparedness strategies, and safety practices before, during, and after flooding.
Speaking during the programme, the State Coordinator, Alhaji Umaru, urged the community members to keep the drainage channels free of blockages, avoid indiscriminate waste disposal, and relocate promptly to safer areas whenever flood warnings are issued by relevant authorities.
He also reiterated the Commission's commitment to protecting lives and property through sustained public awareness campaigns and proactive disaster risk reduction initiatives.
He emphasised that active community participation is essential to minimising the devastating effects of floods.
In her remarks, the Gwada Area Officer, Hajia Zainab Bmitosahi, urged residents to remain vigilant throughout the rainy season, pay close attention to early warning information, and work collectively to build a safer and more resilient community.
Receiving the delegation, the Dakachin Shatta, Mallam Abubakar Garba Kali, alongside other community leaders, commended N-HYPPADEC for the timely intervention.
They described the sensitisation exercise as a valuable initiative that would improve public awareness and strengthen the community's preparedness against flood-related disasters.
The community leaders also appealed to the Commission to support the construction of an access road and provide additional classroom blocks to improve educational infrastructure in the area.
Responding to the requests, N-HYPPADEC's Chief Town Planner, Dr Ibrahim Babangida, assured the community that their appeals would be conveyed to the Commission's management for consideration.
