N-HYPPADEC ADVANCES FLOOD AWARENESS CAMPAIGN TO KOTON KARFE, IDAH, LOKOJA, AND OFU LGAs OF KOGI STATE.

The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has extended its ongoing flood awareness and advocacy campaign to Koton Karfe, Idah, Lokoja, and Ofu Local Government Areas of Kogi State as part of efforts to reduce the impact of flooding on vulnerable riverine communities.

The annual sensitisation campaign is one of the Commission's proactive interventions aimed at minimising the loss of lives, protecting property, and strengthening community preparedness against the recurring flood disasters that affect many parts of N-HYPPADEC states during the rainy season.

The Kogi State campaign commenced at the palace of the Ohimegye Igu of Koton Karfe, His Royal Majesty Dr. Saidu Akawu Salihu, before moving to Idah, Lokoja, and Ofu Local Government Areas.

The exercise brought together traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to promote collective action and encourage early preparedness against impending floods.

Representing the Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa (Katukan Yauri), the Assistant Director of Finance, Mr. Bala Mohammad, said flood resilience can only be achieved through a collective and coordinated approach involving government agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders, and residents.

He urged people living in flood-prone areas to heed early warning alerts issued by the commission and other relevant authorities.

During the flag-off ceremony, Mr. Mohammad presented educational materials and information flyers to support grassroots sensitisation and ensure that vital flood safety messages reach communities across the affected local government areas.

In his address, the Ohimegye Igu of Koton Karfe commended N-HYPPADEC for its timely and consistent interventions in the community.

He described the Commission as one of the Federal Government's most impactful development partners and pledged the support of the traditional institution in ensuring that flood awareness messages reach every household within his domain.

The Kogi State Coordinator of N-HYPPADEC, Dr. Michael Omeiza Ajayi, noted that Koton Karfe and several neighbouring riverine communities remain highly vulnerable to annual flooding. He encouraged residents to actively participate in the sensitisation exercise, share their experiences, and adopt the safety measures being promoted, stressing that community involvement is essential to building resilience against flood disasters.

Also speaking, the Koton Karfe Area Officer, Zubeiru Ali Bukar, appealed for the maximum cooperation of community members throughout the exercise, assuring them that the Commission would sustain the awareness campaign throughout the rainy season.

He also appreciated the traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents for their unwavering support, describing them as dependable partners of the Commission.
