MD N-HYPPADEC MEETS DG NCCC: EXPLORE PARTNERSHIPS TO IMPROVE CLIMATE FINANCE FOR MEMBER STATES.

The Managing Director, National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, has visited the Director General, National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Dr. (Mrs.) Tenioye Majekodunmi, to explore partnership opportunities aimed at attracting international funding for development and climate-resilience interventions in communities affected by hydroelectric power operations.

The meeting, held in Abuja, focused on strengthening collaboration between the two institutions and identifying opportunities to attract international climate finance and development support for interventions in NHYPPADEC's mandate areas across the ten member states.

The Managing Director explained that the Commission's interest in partnership is fundamentally driven by its commitment to improving the socio-economic conditions of communities affected by the operations of hydroelectric dams.

“Our major concern is to explore partnerships that will translate into improved living standards for the communities affected by the operations of hydroelectric dams in the ten member states.”

He noted that strategic partnerships with relevant national and international institutions would enable N-HYPPADEC to expand the scope and impact of its interventions, particularly in areas of key flood and erosion control infrastructure, environmental sustainability, climate adaptation and livelihood improvement.

The N-HYPPADEC Chief Executive emphasised that the Commission is keen to leverage available opportunities in the international climate finance space to support sustainable interventions that respond to the peculiar environmental and developmental challenges confronting communities within its mandate.

The Director General, National Council on Climate Change Dr. (Mrs.) Tenioye Majekodunmi stressed the importance of creating platforms through which development partners and donor agencies could better understand N-HYPPADEC's interventions and their impact on affected communities.

She said,

“We need to explore partnership opportunities at COP, through side events where most of the donor agencies will see some of the things you do for these communities.”

Dr. Majekodunmi noted that such international platforms provide opportunities for Nigerian institutions to showcase credible climate-related interventions, engage potential development partners, and build relationships capable of unlocking resources for climate action and sustainable development.

The NCCC Director General also highlighted the strategic role of hydropower generation in enhancing climate resilience, noting the importance of sustainable energy development in supporting Nigeria's response to climate change while strengthening energy security.

The discussions further underscored the importance of developing bankable and measurable projects that can meet the requirements of international climate financing institutions and development partners.

Both institutions expressed commitment to strengthening technical engagement and exploring concrete areas of collaboration, including opportunities for N-HYPPADEC to showcase its interventions, unveil impact stories from the affected subnationals at international climate platforms and side events.

The engagement between N-HYPPADEC and the NCCC is expected to further strengthen Nigeria's institutional response to climate change while opening new avenues for financing interventions designed to enhance resilience, protect vulnerable communities, and improve livelihoods in the nation's hydroelectric power-producing areas.
